General Discussion / Name for a new robotics community
« on: December 03, 2016, 05:44:16 PM »
I've been considering trying to build UKNAO into a more inclusive community that runs more than just the NAO events and which attempts to bring robotics developers together for virtual and in-person events (and not just in London).

Such a new group needs a name and this is where I need your help. I've come up with a few ideas for a name for  a  community.

There's a poll here: http://doodle.com/poll/avgerqhdu946xm4t

I'm not sure if we should focus on social robotics or not, hence the variations. Also not sure if we should mention geography or not. If we want to attract people from outside the UK for the hackathons we might not want to have UK in the name. Also if we do virtual events, having UK in the name might not be helpful.

Anyway, please pick the name you like best on the poll or reply here if you want to add another option.

thanks

Dave

General Discussion / Engineering Sample?
« on: November 30, 2016, 04:05:52 PM »
My Alpha2 has a sticker saying "Engineering Sample" on the back of the installed battery.
Anyone know what that means?
Does everyone else who's received their Alpha have the same?
thanks

General Discussion / How well does speech recognition work for you?
« on: November 29, 2016, 10:51:45 PM »
Title says it all really. I've not managed to get my robot to do more than respond to "alpha" have not yet managed to get it to actually perform any actions. I'll try next time with the command list that Davide found and see if I have better luck. I'd be interested to hear how well it works for everyone else.

General Discussion / Any mac users?
« on: November 29, 2016, 10:46:42 PM »
Just curious if any other developers here are using macs. Hopefully android studio works with the Alpha 2 SDK on mac.

I'll download the PC program and give it a go - presumably that is intended as a simplified way to build behaviours.I'd be interested to know if it can generate animations or behaviours that can be incorporated into android apps.

General Discussion / My Alpha 2 arrived!
« on: November 29, 2016, 10:42:56 PM »
Yay, my Alpha 2 finally arrived!  ;D

Attached photo with NAO for comparison. I'm really impressed with the build quality - the robot feels very solid and well made, much more so than I was expecting to be honest.

Startup procedure and connecting the robot to the network went fairly smoothly.

I've not had a lot of luck with speech recognition though. The first time I powered the robot on it would react to me saying "alpha" about 50% of the time but I did not manage to actually trigger any actions. The second time I powered the robot on it seemed totally deaf, not sure if I need to ensure that Chat partner is running first.

This is the most comprehensive Alpha2 demo video I've seen so far:

General Discussion / In person meetup?
« on: November 14, 2016, 02:21:21 PM »
Is there any interest in getting together to chat about developing for Alpha2 in person? Maybe exchange demos if anyone has something running. Given not everyone has received their robot yet even seeing one running live would be interesting for me.

Beer and/or coffee could also be involved?

I'm based in London but willing to travel. Where is everyone else located?
